HewasborninHighbury,London,andbeganhistechnicalcareerlearninginstrument-makingskillsattheElliottBrothers,afirmofLondoninstrumentmakersfoundedin1804,followedbytheBellTelephoneCompanyinAntwerp.In1891,heestablishedaninstrument-makingcompany,RobertW.PaulInstrumentCompany,initiallywithaworkshopat44HattonGarden,London,laterhisoffice.In1894,hewasapproachedbytwoGreekbusinessmenwhowantedhimtomakecopiesofanEdisonKinetoscopethattheyhadpurchased.Heatfirstrefused,thenfoundtohisamazementthatEdisonhadnotpatentedtheinventioninBritain.Subsequently,PaulhimselfwouldgoontopurchaseaKinetoscope,intentontakingitapartandre-creatinganEnglish-basedversion.Hemanufacturedanumberofthese,oneofwhichwassuppliedtoGeorgesMéliès.However,theonlyfilmsavailablewere'bootleg'copiesofthoseproducedfortheEdisonmachines.AsEdisonhadpatentedhiscamera(thedetailsofwhichwereacloselyguardedsecret),Paulresolvedtosolvethisbottleneckbycreatinghisowncamera.HewasintroducedtoBirtAcres,aphotographicexpert,whohadinventedadevicetomovefilmaspartofthedevelopingprocess.PaulthoughtthatAcre'sprinciplecouldbeusedinacamera.Thiscamera,dubbedthePaul-AcresCamera,inventedinMarch1895,wouldbethefirstcameramadeinEngland.
