YvesRobert(19June1920–10May2002)wasaFrenchactor,screenwriter,director,andproducer.RobertwasborninSaumur,Maine-et-Loire,France.Inhisteens,hewenttoParistopursueacareerinacting,startingwithunpaidpartsonstageinthecity'svarioustheatreworkshops.Fromages12–20hesettypeasatypographer,thenstudiedmimeinhisearly20s.In1948hemadehismotionpicturedebutwithoneofthesecondaryrolesinthefilm,LesDieuxdudimanche.Withinafewyears,Robertwaswritingscripts,directing,andproducing.YvesRobert'sdirectorialeffortsincludedseveralsuccessfulcomediesforwhichhehadwrittenthescreenplay.His1962film,LaGuerredesboutonswonFrance'sPrixJeanVigo.His1972filmLegrandblondavecunechaussurenoirewontheSilverBearatthe23rdBerlinInternationalFilmFestivalin1973.In1976,Unéléphantçatrompeénormément,starringhiswife,earnedhiminternationalacclaim.Robert's1973devastatingcomedySalutl'artisteisconsideredbymanyperformerstobetheultimatefilmaboutthehumiliationsoftheactor'slife.In1977,hedirectedanothercomedy,Nousironstousauparadis,whichwasnominatedforaCésarAwardforBestFilm.In1990,Robertdirectedtwodramaticfilms,MyMother'sCastle(Lechâteaudemamère)andMyFather'sGlory(LaGloiredemonPère).BasedonautobiographicalnovelsbyMarcelPagnol,theywerejointlyvoted"BestFilm"atthe1991SeattleInternationalFilmFestival,andreceivedravereviews.Overhiscareer,hedirectedmorethantwentyfeature-lengthmotionpictures,wroteanequalnumberofscripts,andactedinmorethanseventy-fivefilms.Althoughhislastmajorrolewasperhapsin1980,ABadSonbyClaudeSautet,astheworking-classfatherofadrug-dealer,hecontinuedactingpast1997.RobertplayedoppositeDanièleDelormeinthe1951playColombe(Dove)byJeanAnouilh.Theymarriedin1956,andjointlyformedthefilmproductioncompanyLaGuévillein1961.LaGuévillealsoreleasedseveralfilmsbyMontyPythonandTerryGilliam,whichwasveryinfluentialintoestablishingthecomedytroupetoFrenchaudiences.HediedinParison10May2002fromacerebralhemorrhage.HewasburiedinMontparnasseCemeterywiththeepitaph"Amanofjoy...",wherevisitorsleavebuttonsofmanycolors.HewassurvivedbyDanièleandtwochildren,AnneandJean-DenisRobert,byfirstwife,actressRosyVarte.Thatmonth'sCannesFilmFestivalpaidhomagetohiscontributiontoFrenchfilm.
