MauroBolognini(28June1922–14May2001)wasanItalianfilmandstagedirectorofliteratesensibility,knownforhismasterlyhandlingofperiodsubjectmatter.EarlyyearsBologniniwasborninPistoia,intheTuscanyregionofItaly.Afterearningamaster'sdegreeinarchitectureattheUniversityofFlorence,BologninienrolledattheCentroSperimentalediCinematografia(ItalianNationalFilmAcademy)inRome,wherehestudiedstagedesign.Aftergraduation,hebecameinterestedinfilmdirectionandsetouttoworkasanassistanttodirectorsLuigiZampainItaly,andYvesAllégretandJeanDelannoyinFrance.FilmandtelevisionBologninibegandirectinghisownfeaturefilmsinthemid-1950s,andreceivedhisfirstinternationalsuccesswithWildLove(Gliinnamorati).Hisothernotablefilmsofthe1950sandearly1960sincludeYoungHusbands(Giovanimariti),TheBigNight(Lanottebrava),FromaRomanBalcony(Lagiornatabalorda),andtheMarcelloMastroianni-ClaudiaCardinalestarrerIlbell'Antonio(arguablyhismasterpiece),allwrittenbyPierPaoloPasolini.PartingprofessionallywithPasoliniin1961,BologninidirectedtwolovestoriesstarringClaudiaCardinale,TheLovemakers(Laviaccia)andCareless(Senilità),andthecoming-of-agefilmsAgostinoandCorruption(Lacorruzione)beforeturninghistalentstoaseriesofinternationalanthologyfilms,includingTheDolls(Lebambole),ThreeFacesofaWoman(Itrevolti),TheQueens(Lefate)andTheWitches(Lestreghe).Bologninireturnedtofeaturesin1966withMadamigelladiMaupin(MademoiselledeMaupin)featuringCatherineSpaakandRobertHossein.Hisfilmsofthe1970sincludetheperioddramasMetelloandBubù,bothstarringMassimoRanieri,TheMurriAffair(Fattidigenteperbene)starringGiancarloGianniniandCatherineDeneuveandTheInheritance(L'ereditàFerramonti)withAnthonyQuinnandDominiqueSanda.In1981,BologninifilmedTheLadyoftheCamellias(Lastoriaveradellasignoradellecamelie),inspiredbytheAlexandreDumas,filsnovelandplay.Throughoutthedecade,hecontinueddirectingfeaturefilms,aswellasthetelevisionminiseriesTheCharterhouseofParmaandATimeofIndifference.Hisfinalfeaturewasthesoft-coreeroticdramaHusbandandLovers(Lavilladelvenerdì)starringJulianSandsandJoannaPacula,releasedin1991.StageandoperaInthemid-1960s,Bologninistartedtoshowaninterest,asstagedirector,intheproductionofoperasandplays.Hisdebutwasin1964withVerdi'sErnaniattheTeatroMassimoinPalermo,featuringtenorMarioDelMonaco.Itwasfollowed,inthesameyear,byPuccini'sToscaattheTeatrodell'OperadiRomainRome,andbymanyothers,including:VincenzoBellini'sNormaatLaScalainMilan(1972),andattheBolshoioperahouseinMoscow(1975);Verdi'sAidaatLaFeniceinVenice(1978);andHenze'sPollicinoatthePolizianooperahouseinMontepulciano(1995).DeathBologninidiedinRome,Italy,in2001,aged78.
