DianeEnglishisanAmericanfilmdirector,screenwriterandproducer,knownforcreatingthesitcomMurphyBrown.ShealsoservedaswriterandexecutiveproducerofthesitcomMySisterSam.EnglishwasborninBuffalo,NewYork,thedaughterofAnneandRichardEnglish,whowasanelectricalengineer.ShegraduatedfromNardinAcademyinBuffalo,NewYork,andthenfromBuffaloStateCollegein1970.In1986,shebecametheexecutiveproducerofthePamDawbersitcomMySisterSam,whichranfortwoseasonsonCBSandco-starredRebeccaSchaeffer.In1988,shecreatedtheCBStelevisionseriesMurphyBrown,forwhichshewononeEmmyforOutstandingWritinginaComedySeriesandtwoforOutstandingComedySeries.In1992,EnglishstirredupcontroversywhenthetitlecharacterofMurphyBrowndecidedtohaveachildoutofwedlock.VicePresidentDanQuaylestronglyvoicedhisdisapprovalofthisdecision,opiningthatEnglishwasmockingtheimportanceofafather'sroleintherearingofachild.QuaylewasalsojoinedinhisprotestbyEnglish'sbrotherRichardEnglish,whoisaBaptistpreacherinWesternNewYork.Severalyearslater,PresidentBillClintonstatedthatQuaylemadesomevalidpointsinhisremarks.In1991,whiledrivingEnglishtotheairport,herhusbandfailedtoyieldtopedestrianAliceFiondellawhowaslegallycrossinginamarkedcrosswalk,runningherdownandkillingher.EnglishlatercreatedthecomedyseriesLove&War,firstwithSusanDeyandthenwithAnniePotts,whichranfrom1992to1995onCBS.In2007,EnglishbeganshootingTheWomen,herfeaturefilmdirectorialdebut.Thecomedy,whichisaremakeofthe1939GeorgeCukorfilmofthesamename,starsMegRyan,EvaMendes,andAnnetteBening,andwasreleasedin2008,tomostlynegativereviews,althoughtriplingitsbudgetworldwide.In2008,EnglishandtheensemblecastofTheWomenwerehonoredwiththeWomeninFilmCrystalaward.
