GiuseppeDeSantis(11February1917–16May1997)wasanItalianfilmdirector.Oneofthemostidealisticneorealistfilmmakersofthe1940sand1950s,hewroteanddirectedfilmspunctuatedbyardentcriesforsocialreform.HewasthebrotherofItaliancinematographerPasqualinoDeSantis.HiswifewasGordanaMiletic(nativespelling:Miletić),aYugoslavactressandformerballetdancer.DeSantiswasborninFondi,Lazio.HewasamemberoftheItalianCommunistParty(PCI)andfoughtwiththeanti-GermanResistanceinRomeduringWorldWarII.HewasfirstastudentofphilosophyandliteraturebeforeenteringRome'sCentroSperimentalediCinematografia.WhileworkingasajournalistforCinemamagazine,DeSantisbecame,undertheinfluenceofCesareZavattini,amajorproponentoftheearlyneorealistfilmmakerswhoweretryingtomakefilmsthatmirroredthesimpleandtragicrealitiesofproletarianlifeusinglocationshootingandnonprofessionalactors.In1942,DeSantiscollaboratedonthescriptforOssessione,LuchinoVisconti'sdebutfilm,whichisusuallyconsideredoneofthefirstneo-realistfilms.WhilestillworkingforCinemamagazine,heincreasinglyworkedasascreenwriterandassistantdirectoruntil1947whenhemadehisowndirectorialdebutwithCacciaTragica(TragicHunt).Likethetwofilmstofollow,itwasasincerecallforbetterlivingconditionsfortheItalianworkingclassandagrarianworkers.Issuesofcorruption,theblackmarket,collaborationwiththeGermans,andtreatmentofex-soldierswerealsointroducedinthefilm.HisthirdfilmBitterRice(1950),thestoryofayoungwomanworkinginthericefieldswhomustchoosebetweentwosociallydisparatesuitors,madeastarofSilvanaManganoandwasalandmarkofthenewcinematicstyle.ItalsoearnedDeSantisanAcademyAwardnominationforBestOriginalStory.Bytheearly1950s,theneorealistmovementwasfallingoutoffavourwithcriticsandaudiences.NewfilmmakersbeganusingdramaticstoriesthatcenteredonrelationshipsanddeSantisalsoalteredhisfocus.In1952hefilmedRomaore11(Rome11o'clock),thefirstversionoftherealtragicaccidentthatAugustoGeninaremadein1953asThreeForbiddenStories.In1959hewonaGoldenGlobewithLastradalungaunanno;thefilm,producedinYugoslavia,hadanominationfortheOscarasBestForeignLanguageFilm.[1]In1979hewasamemberofthejuryatthe11thMoscowInternationalFilmFestival.[2]In1985hewasamemberofthejuryatthe14thMoscowInternationalFilmFestival.[3]DeSantisdiedin1997attheageof80,inRome,followingaheartattack,andadayofmourningwasdeclaredinItaly.ApartofhisarchiveshavebeendonatedtotheReynoldsLibraryofWakeForestUniversity.Also,hiswifeandfriendshaveestablishedaFoundationnamedafterhim.
