Hamerwasbornat179ChesterRoad,Kidderminster,alongwithhistwinBarbara,thesonofOwenDykeHamer,abankclerk,andAnnieGraceBrickell.HewaseducatedatRossallSchool,anindependentschoolforboysnearthetownofFleetwoodinLancashire,andwonascholarshiptoCorpusChristiCollege,Cambridgebutwassentdown.Hebeganhisfilmcareerin1934asacuttingroomassistant,andfrom1935workedasafilmeditorinvolvedwithsuchfilmsasHitchcock'sJamaicaInn(1939)co-producedbyCharlesLaughton.Attheendofthe1930s,heworkedondocumentariesfortheGPOFilmUnit.WhenhisbossattheGPO,AlbertoCavalcanti,movedtoEalingStudios,Hamerwasinvitedtojoinhimthere.Hegainedsomeexperienceasadirectorbysubstitutingforcolleaguesandcontributedthe'hauntedmirror'sequencetoDeadofNight(1945).HefollowedthiswiththethreeEalingfilmsunderhisownnameforwhichheisbestremembered:PinkStringandSealingWax(1946),ItAlwaysRainsonSunday(1947),bothfeaturingGoogieWithers,andKindHeartsandCoronets(1949),withDennisPriceandAlecGuinness.hewasanalcoholic,whobythetimeofhislastfilmasdirector,SchoolforScoundrels(1960)was"oftenbattlingterrifyingDThallucinations"(i.e.alcoholwithdrawalsymptoms,occurringonlyinpatientswithahistoryofalcoholism).BFIScreenonlinewritesthatHamerwas"arecoveringalcoholic"andthat"hefelloffthewagonduringproductionofSchoolForScoundrels,wassackedonthespot...andwouldneverworkintheindustryagain."Inactualfact,althoughheneverdirectedagain,hedidcontributetotwomorefilmscreenplaysbeforehedied.HamerwasalsohomosexualinanerawhenitwasillegalintheUK.Hediedofpneumoniaattheageof52atStThomas'sHospitalinLondon,andisburiedatLlandegley.AccordingtofilmcriticDavidThomson,Hamer'scareer"nowlookslikethemostseriousmiscarriageoftalentinthepostwarBritishcinema".
