JoeRoberts(February2,1871–October28,1923)wasanAmericancomicactor,mostnotablyinBusterKeaton'ssilentshortfilmsofthe1920s."BigJoe"Roberts,ashewasknowninvaudeville,touredthecountrywithhisfirstwife,LillianStuartRobertsaspartofarowdyactknownasRoberts,Hays,andRoberts.Theirsignatureroutinewascalled"TheCowboy,theSwellandtheLady."[1]Atthistime,inthefirstdecadeofthetwentiethcentury,BusterKeaton'sfather,JoeKeaton,hadstartedasummerActors'ColonyforvaudevilliansbetweenLakeMichiganandMuskegonLakeinMichigan.RobertsbecameacquaintedwiththeKeatonfamilyasamemberofthiscommunity.[2]WhenBusterKeaton'sfilmapprenticeshipyearswithRoscoe"Fatty"Arbucklecametoanend,andKeatonbeganmakinghisownshortsin1920,heaskedRobertstojoinhim.Roberts'hefty6'3"framemadeastrikingandamusingcontrasttothethin,5'6"Keaton.Heappearedin16ofKeaton's19silentshortfilms,usuallyplayingamenacingheavyorauthorityfigure.IMDBshowsthatRobertsmadeonlytwofilmswithoutKeaton.Heplayedtheroleof"RoaringBill"Riversin1922'sThePrimitiveLover,starringKeaton'ssister-in-law,ConstanceTalmadgeandsilentstar,HarrisonFord,andadrillmasterintheClydeCookcomedyTheMisfit,releasedinMarch1924,afterRoberts'death.WhenKeatonbeganmakingfeaturefilmsin1923,heapparentlyintendedtocontinueworkingwithRoberts.RobertshadrolesinKeaton'sThreeAges,andOurHospitality(both1923).Duringthefilmingofthesecondfeature,Robertshadastrokebutinsistedonreturningtothesettofinishthefilm.Aftercompletion,Robertssufferedanotherstrokeanddiedshortlyafterwards.
