LuisMiguelGonzálezLucas(9November1926–8May1996),betterknownasLuisMiguelDominguín,wasabullfighterfromSpain.HisfatherwasthelegendaryDomingoDominguín;headoptedhisfather'snametogainpopularity.EarlycareerDominguínmadehisfirstpublicappearanceintheringattheageofeleven.Hebecameamatadorin1941.Heenjoyedwidepopularityduringthe1940sand1950sinSpain,Portugal,Colombiaandothercountries.HewasonthecardinLinares,Spainon28August1947whenanotherlegend,hisrivalManolete,wasfatallygored.Dominguínwasalsoasocialite,havingfriendslikePabloPicassoandromanceswiththeAmericanactressAvaGardnerandthefashionmodelChinaMachado.In1955,hemarriedactressLuciaBosé,whogavebirthtohissonMiguelBosé,aGrammy-awardwinningsinger.Healsooccasionallyappearedinfilms,predominantlyplayinghimselfincameoroles,inmoviessuchasAroundtheWorldin80Days(1956),TestamentofOrpheus(1960),andThePicassoSummer(1969).In1959,heandhisbrother-in-law,AntonioOrdóñez,engagedinabullfightingrivalrythatwaschronicledinErnestHemingway'sposthumousbookTheDangerousSummer.Ordóñezwon.In1964,hewasamysteryguestontheUSTVshowWhat'sMyLine?LatercareerIn1971,attheageof44,hereturnedtothebullring.Thatyearheretiredagain,butreturnedtotheringin1971,aged45,whenheattemptedtofathomthesport'scontinuingallure.HiscomebackwasatLasPalmas,theCanaryIslands,henheworethecostumeknownasthe"suitoflights,"whichhadbeendesignedforhimbyPicasso.Hekilledtwobullsandwononeear,butwasovershadowedbyyoungermen-althoughtheactressDeborahKerr,whowasinthecrowd,insisted,"Heisstillthegreatestbull-fighter."MarriagesandrelationshipsMiroslavaSternovaIn1953,LuisMiguelDominguínmetMiroslavaSternovainCuba.Dominguínwashalfayearyoungerthanshe,sotheypartedasfriendsonlyuntiltheymetagainin1954,thistimeintheUnitedStates.ShewentontoworkabroadinSpaintomeetupwithfriendsandDominguín.AfterherreturntoMexicoSternovawasfounddeadfromanoverdose.Inonehandsheclutchedthreefarewellnotes;intheother,aphotographshowingherwithDominguínandhismother.RumorhasitthatshetookherownlifeoverthemarriageofDominguínandBosè.AvaGardnerBy1954,Dominguín'sfriendshipwithAvaGardnerwasbeingwidelyreported.Heconsideredherthemostbeautifulwomanhehadeverseen,butlikedhermore,hesaid,forherhumorandunderstanding;heconfessedhimselfunsurewhathelookedforinwomen."Menfallinlovewithawoman'sfaultsratherthanherqualities,"hemused.Avahadbeenpreviouslyassociatedwithotherbullfighters,thoughstillmarriedatthetimetoFrankSinatra.Themostspiritedofthemallwas,nodoubt,LuisMiguelDominguín.However,therelationshipwassopassionateandstormy,andthefightsbetweenhimandthedivahadpeopletalking.Butalsotheyhadtheirtendermoments.Itissaidthatontheirfirstnightoflovemaking,hegotoutofbedandsheasked:"Whereareyougoing?"."Togotell!"repliedthebullfighter.Yearslater,headmittedtoafriendhemadeupthatanecdote.SubsequentlyAvadivorcedSinatra,andLuisMiguelsawhischancetoestablishamorestablerelationship.Hewantedtogetmarriedandhavechildren,butthiswasnotintheHollywoodactress'plans.TheidyllendedinSeptember1954.Yearslater,hewasrecallingwithaffection:"Shewastheprettiestandthemostfierce.Ihadaveryfiercewolfinacage."LuciaBoséItalianactressandformerMissItaly,LuciaBoséflewtoMadridtoshootthefilmMuertedeunciclista("DeathofaCyclist").Attheairportshemettheproducer,ManuelGoyanes,andLuisMiguel,whointroducedhimtotheItalianactress.Atfirstshethoughthewasjustablowhardbully,butintheendheinspiredinterestandwonherover.Theystillhadnotyetkissedwhenheaskedhertomarryhim.TheyweremarriedinLasVegason1March1955.Luciahasconfessedthattheirfirstyearofmarriagewasnotidyllic:"Itwasaveryhardexperience.IdidnotspeakSpanishandIdonotknowanything,hedidnotspeakItalian.Ithinkthat'showthepassionwasborn,becausewedidnotunderstandeachother.WhenIbegantounderstandwhohewasandhewhoIwas,thecrisisbegan."Butthematadorknewwellhowtocompensate:"Itneverceasedtoamazemetheincalculableforceofhissexualincontinence,"saidtheactress.Shortlyaftermarryingshebecamepregnantandwasforcedtomarrythroughthechurchinordertoquellthescandals.Theceremonytookplaceon19October1955.LuisMiguelreturnedtothebullfightingarenasabroadandtheirfirstson,singerMiguelBosé,wasborninPanamaon3April1956.Laterinlife,DominguínwasnotoriouslydisapprovingofBosé'sbuddinghomosexuality.Theirsecondchild,Lucia,bornin1957,andPaola,bornin1960.LuciaandLuisMiguelweremarriedforyears,buttheirdifferenceswereaccentuatedovertime,especiallyherlackofinterestforthebulls.Sheneverbecamepartofthe"Dominguín"clan,andtheDominguinesneverlikedher.Ontheotherhand,theinfidelitiesofthebullfighteralsotooktheirtoll."Inamatterofhorns,Iwasagoldmedal,"Luciaasserted.RosarioPrimodeRiveraHedivorcedBoséin1968,andin1987marriedRosarioPrimodeRivera,nieceofJoséAntonioPrimodeRivera,Spanishfar-rightpoliticianandfounderoftheFalangeEspañolafascistpoliticalparty.In1971,attheageof44,hereturnedtothebullring,andretiredforgoodin1973.DeathHediedofheartfailureat69in1996.HeisburiedinthecemeterySanEnriquedeGuadiaro,nearSotogrande(Cádiz).
