EricdeKuyper(born2September1942)isaFlemish-BelgianandDutchwriter,semiologist,artcritic,andexperimentalfilmdirector.Fictionalizedautobiographicalnovels,writteninthe3rd-person,accountformostofhiscreativework.Hisacademicwritingencompassesreviews,essays,articles,andbooksonsemiotics,film,dance,theater,andopera.Hisnon-traditionalfilmsrevealanengineeredpenchantformelodrama,lovesongs,andsilentmovies;theircentraltopicishomosexuality.Towardstheendofthe2000s,hestartedorganizingconcertsenimages,eventsinwhichhecombinessilentfilms,somesegmentsshotbyhimselffortheoccasions,withliveclassicalmusic,andsometimessingingandacting.EricdeKuyperwasbornandspenthisearlychildhoodinBrusselsandthen,asheputit,histeenageyearsofchoicesswayedby"faith,sexuality,andthefuture"inAntwerp.Accordingtohim,hisfamilymostlyspokeDutchwhilethey"thoughtinFrenchandfeltthemoresubtleemotions"inthatlanguage.AftergraduatingfromNotreDameJesuitHighSchool,hereturnedtothecityofhisbirthtostudyintheDepartmentofAudiovisualandDramaticArtsandTechniques(Rits),ErasmusUniversityCollegeBrussels,andtookcoursesinphilosophyandmasscommunicationattheFreeUniversityofBrussels.Whileincollege,hebegantoworkasaproducerattheFlemishRadioandTelevisionNetwork.In1974heregisteredforgraduatestudyattheSchoolforAdvancedStudiesintheSocialSciencesinPariswhereheworkedinsemioticsandfromwhichhereceivedaPhDforhisthesis"PouruneSémiotiqueSpectaculaire"underthedirectionofA.J.Greimasin1979.Beforehebecameafull-timewriterin1992,hewasprofessoroffilmtheoryattheCatholicUniversityofNijmegenintheNetherlands(1978–1988),andthendeputydirectoroftheDutchFilmMuseum(1988–1992).HewasontheeditorialboardofandcontributedtotheDutchacademicfilmjournalVersus.DeKuyperhasdescribedhimselfasbelongingtothedyingbreedofinhabitantsofBrusselswhoarefullybilingualinDutch(Flemish)andFrench,healsospeaksEnglishandGerman.HismostfrequentcoauthorofacademicpapersandteammateinfilmmakinghasbeenanotherFlemishBelgiananddeKuyper'sfellowstudentatBrusselsandParis,EmilePoppe,lateracolleagueatNijmegenUniversity(Poppe'spositionwiththeFilmArchiveseventuallyassociatedhimwiththeUniversityofGroningen).TheylivenearNijmegeninKranenburginGermany,about5miles(8.0km)fromtheDutchborder,asdoesthemaincharacterofdeKuyper'sshortstory"Deverkeerdekrant,"("TheWrongNewspaper").DeKuyperhassaidthathefeelsathomebothinBelgiumandtheNetherlandstoacertaindegree,aswellassomewhatofastrangerineachofthecountries.
