HervéVillechaizewasborninParisonApril23,1943.Hestoppedgrowingveryearlyandhisfather(whowasasurgeon)triedtofindacurebyvisitingseveraldoctorsandhospitals.Buttherewasnone,soHervéhadtolivewithhissmallheightandalsowithundersizedlungs.HestudiedattheBeaux-ArtsinParisandmadeanexhibitionofhisownpaintings,whichwerewellreceived.At21,heleftFrancefortheUSAwherehecontinuedtopaintandtomakephotographs.Healsostartedtoparticipateinsomemoviesandwasquicklyofferedseveralrolesforplaysandthenforcinema.HisfirstbigsuccesswasTheManwiththeGoldenGun(1974)wherehewasakillerassociatedtothevillainScaramanga(playedbyChristopherLee).HeinspiredtheTV-seriesFantasyIsland(1977)wherehetooktheroleof"Tattoo",thefaithfulservantof"Mr.Roarke"(RicardoMontalban).Thisserieswasagreatsuccessand,thankstoit,Villechaizebecamefamousandrich,mostlybecauseofhisenigmaticandcharmingsmile.In1983,hearguedwiththeproducersoftheshowinordertoearnasmuchmoneyasMontalbanbut,instead,hewasfired;healsolosthismodel-actresswife.Theseriescontinuedwithouthimbutstoppedoneyearlater,whenthemediaresponsemeterdecreasedbecauseofthelackofTattoo'scharacter!Villechaizebecamealcoholicanddepressed,sohemissedseveralrolesthathewasoffered.Hishealthproblemsalsoincreased(mostlysufferingfromulcersandaspasticcolon),andhenearlydiedofpneumoniain1992.OntheafternoonofSaturdaySeptember4th,1993,afterhavingwatchedamovie,hewroteanoteandmadeataperecordingbeforeshootinghimselfinhisbackyard.Hiscommon-lawwife,KathySelf,discoveredhisbodyandcalledtheambulancewhichtookhimtotheMedicalCenterofNorthHollywoodwherehediedat3:40pm.VillechaizewascrematedandhisasheswerescatteredoffPointFermin,inLosAngeles.
