KennethConnorMBE(6June1918[1][2]–28November1993)wasanEnglishcomedystage,radio,filmandTVactor,bestknownforhisappearancesintheCarryOnfilms.BorninIslington,London,thesonofanavalpettyofficerwhoorganisedconcertparties[1]Connorfirstappearedonthestageattheageof2asanorgan-grinder'smonkeyinoneofhisfather'sshows,inPortsmouth.By11yearsold,hehadhisownact.HeattendedtheCentralSchoolofSpeechandDrama,wherehewasaGoldMedalwinner.ConnormadehisprofessionaldebutinJMBarrie'sTheBoyDavid,atHisMajesty'sTheatre,London,inDecember1936.DuringWWIIheservedasaninfantrygunnerwiththeMiddlesexRegimentbutcontinuedactingbytouringItalyandtheMiddleEastwiththeStarsInBattledressconcertpartyandENSA.WhilewaitingtobedemobbedinCairo,ConnorreceivedatelegramfromWilliamDevlinaskinghimtojointhenewlyformedBristolOldVic,wherehegainedasolidgroundingintheclassics.HemovedontotheLondonOldViccompanyfora1947-48seasonattheNewTheatre.HismostnotableperformancestherewereasChaplaindeStogumberinSaintJoanandDobchinskyinTheGovernmentInspector,whichstarredAlecGuinness.Realisinghewasnota``tall,impressivejuvenileleadorayounglovertype``hedecidedtospecialiseincomedy.HetookoverfromPeterSellersinTedRay'sradioshowRay'saLaugh-launchedbytheBBCin1949asasuccessortoTommyHandley'sITMA.Heplayedthebrother-in-lawandotheroddballcharacterssuchasSidneyMincing.RaytookConnorwithhimtohisTVshows,andthepairwouldstartogetherinthethirdCarryOnfilm,CarryOnTeacher.OnoccasionheappearedinTheGoonShow,standinginforregularcastmembersstruckdownbyillness.Healsoappearedintheanarchic,Goon-styleTVseriesIdiotWeekly,Price2d(1956)andAShowCalledFred(1956).In1955,ConnorgainedasmallroleinthefilmTheLadykillers(1955)asataxidriver.In1958,hewascastinthefirstCarryOnfilm,CarryOnSergeantandbecameoneoftheregularcastintheseries,appearinginseventeenoftheoriginalthirtyfilmsandmanyoftheassociatedtelevisionproductions.AlongsideKennethWilliamsandEricBarker,ConnorwasoneofonlythreeactorstoappearinboththefirstandlastoftheoriginalsequenceofCarryOnfilms(CarryOnSergeantandCarryOnEmmanuelle).InhisearlierCarryOnappearances,Connorfrequentlyplayedtheromanticleadorothersympatheticstraightroles,whilelaterappearancessawhimplaypompousunsympatheticcharacterssuchasmarriedmenwithwanderingeyesandlasciviousremarks.InCarryOnNurse(1959),hisreal-lifesonJeremy[3]appearedashischaracterBernieBishop'sson.In1961,hestarredwithfellowCarryOnstarsSidJamesandEsmaCannoninthecomedyfilmWhataCarveUp!.Intheearly1960s,heappearedasvariouscharactersintheFourFeatherFallspuppetseries.IncontrastwithsomeofhisCarryOnco-stars,ConnorfoundfurthersuccessontheLondonstage.ConnorstarredintherevueOneOvertheEight(1962),attheDukeofYork'sTheatre,theoriginalLondonWestEndproductionwithFrankieHowerdoftheStephenSondheimmusicalAFunnyThingHappenedOntheWaytotheForum(1963),asHysterium-anddirectedtheshowwhenitwentontour-TheFourMusketeers(1967),withHarrySecombeattheTheatreRoyal,DruryLane,playingKingLouisXIII,andtherevueCarryOnLondon(1973)attheVictoriaPalace.Between1971and1973,ConnorjoinedDad'sArmystarsArthurLoweandIanLavenderontheBBCradiocomedyParsleySidings.OntelevisionheappearedinTheBlackandWhiteMinstrelShow,asWhatsisnameSmithinthechildren'sshowRentaghost(1983–1984),andasMonsieurAlfonsein'Allo'Allo!(1984–1992)andUncleSammyMorrisinHi-de-Hi!(1986–1988).HealsomadeguestappearancesinsitcomsincludingThat'sMyBoyandYouRang,M'Lord?andhemadeamemorablecameoinanepisodeofBlackaddertheThirdin1987,alongsidefellowveterancomicstarHughPaddick.HisfinalTVappearance,asMrWarreninTheMemoirsOfSherlockHolmesepisodeTheAdventureoftheRedCircle,wasbroadcastposthumouslyin1994.HewasinoverfiftymoviesandwashonouredbytheQueenwithanMBEin1991.Hemadehisfirststageappearanceattheageoftwoandwasstillworkingjusttwodaysbeforehisdeath,withanappearanceonNoelEdmond'sTellyAddicts.ConnordiedofcancerathishomeinHarrow,Londonin1993,[4]andwassurvivedbyhiswifeMargaret(Miki),hissonandthreegrandchildren,Thomas,HayleyandRose,allofwhomhavebeenaccomplishedchildactors.
