JoeDeRita'srealnamewasJosephWardell.HewasbornJuly12,1909inPhiladelphia,Pennsylvania.JoewastheonlyoneoftheStoogestocomefromashowbizfamily.Hismother,FlorenzDeRita,wasadancerandhisfather,FrankWardell,wasastagetechnician.Joewasinshowbusinessfromtheageofseven.Joe'srolesincludedthetitleroleinthestageversionof"Peck'sBadBoy"withhismotherandfather.　　In1921Joewentintoburlesquebecausevaudevillewasjustaboutgone.Joe'sfilmdebutwasin"TheDoughgirls"in1944withAnnSheridanforWarnerBrothers.Duringthewar,JoeworkedwiththeUSOandtraveledextensivelyoverseaswithmanyHollywoodstarsincludinghisfriend,RandolphScott.HemadeseveraltourswithBingCrosbytoentertainservicemeninEnglandandFrance.Afterthewar,JoemadeguestappearancesonradioshowsincludingBurns&AllenandguestappearancesinfilmsandtelevisionshowssuchasTheDesiluPlayhouse,ThisisAlice,andBachelorFather.　　JoeappearedinColumbiashortssuchas"SlappilyMarried"and"TheGoodBadEgg,"theseshortsfeaturedsomeofthesamesupportingactorswhowereintheStoogeShorts.In1958theColumbiashortsubjectsdepartmentwasdisbanded,andTheThreeStoogesnolongerhadacontractwithColumbia.JoeBesserdidnotwanttotravelwiththeactsoMoeandLarryneededathirdstooge.JoeDeRitawasaskedtojointheact,andatthistimetheStoogesformedComedyIIIProductions,Inc.,acompanywhichstillholdsTheThreeStoogesrightsandmanagestheiraffairs.　　In1958ColumbiareleasedtheoldThreeStoogesshortstotelevisionandtherewasanimmediateresurgenceofpopularityoftheStooges.TheStoogeswithCurlyJoeasthethirdStoogemadenumerouspersonalappearancesallaroundthecountryandmadesixfulllengthfeaturemotionpictures.Thisperiodoftimefrom1958andthroughoutthe60'swasdescribedbyLarryFineastheStooges'goldenyears.Whilefilming"Kook'sTour"in1970Larrysufferedastrokewhichlefthimparalyzedontheleftsideofhisbody.TherewassometalkofreplacingLarrywithEmilSitka,butTheThreeStoogesneverperformedtogetheragain.　　CurlyJoeformedanactcalledTheNewThreeStoogeswithMousieGarnerandFrankMitchell,buttheactonlymadeafewappearances.JoewasjusttoooldtodotheStoogeshtickanymore.Curly-JoemarriedJeanDeRitain1966andtheyweremarried25yearsuntilhisdeath.JoeDeRitadiedonJuly3,1993attheMotionPictureHospitalinLosAngeles.Hewasthelaststooge.
