AfterShempHowarddiedin1955,theStoogesreplacedhimwithJoeBesser.JoeBesserwasborninSaintLouis,MissourionAugust12,1907toFannieandMorrisBesser.HisparentswereOrthodoxJewsandmovedtotheUnitedStatesfromPolandin1895whereMorrisworkedasabaker. By1928hewaswellonhiswaytobeingasolocomedian.WhileontourhewasintroducedtoErnaDoraKretschmer(ErnaKay)whomhemarriedonNovember18,1932.ErnaKayservedasachoreographeronthe1929Paramountfilm"TheCoconuts,"whichfeaturedtheMarxBrothers.Around1940,JoetookColumbiaPicturescontracteeJimmyLittleontourashisstraightman.SoonJoebecameaheadlinerontheOrpheum,RKO,Paramount,andLoew'stheatercircuits.HealsoappearedontheBroadwaystage. EventuallyColumbiaPicturessignedJoetoanexclusivecontractandcasthiminfeaturesandComedytworeelers.Slowlymakinghisclimbtostardom,radiocomedianslikeJackBenny,FredAllen,EddieCantor,andMiltonBerlewereallclamoringtohavehimontheirshows.BessermadefrequentappearancesontheJackBennyShow,TheFredAllenShow,TheEddieCantorShow,TonightonBroadway,TheVaughanMonroeShow,andfrom1945to1949heplayedwithMiltonBerleonLetYourselfGo. BessermademanycomedyshortsforColumbiabeforejoiningTheThreeStoogesin1956.JoelefttheStoogesin1958andwentontostarinfeaturefilmsandhadasuccessfultelevisioncareer.OnMarch1,1988,JoepassedawayinhisNorthHollywoodhomeofheartfailure.Fourteenmonthslater,hiswifeErnadiedonJuly1,1989.
