Jean-PaulCharlesAymardSartre(/ˈsɑːrtrə/;[8]French:[saʁtʁ];21June1905–15April1980)wasaFrenchphilosopher,playwright,novelist,politicalactivist,biographer,andliterarycritic.Hewasoneofthekeyfiguresinthephilosophyofexistentialismandphenomenology,andoneoftheleadingfiguresin20th-centuryFrenchphilosophyandMarxism.Hisworkhasalsoinfluencedsociology,criticaltheory,post-colonialtheory,andliterarystudies,andcontinuestoinfluencethesedisciplines.SartrewasalsonotedforhisopenrelationshipwithprominentfeministandfellowexistentialistphilosopherandwriterSimonedeBeauvoir.Together,SartreanddeBeauvoirchallengedtheculturalandsocialassumptionsandexpectationsoftheirupbringings,whichtheyconsideredbourgeois,inbothlifestyleandthought.Theconflictbetweenoppressive,spirituallydestructiveconformity(mauvaisefoi,literally,"badfaith")andan"authentic"wayof"being"becamethedominantthemeofSartre'searlywork,athemeembodiedinhisprincipalphilosophicalworkBeingandNothingness(L'ÊtreetleNéant,1943).[9]Sartre'sintroductiontohisphilosophyishisworkExistentialismandHumanism(L'existentialismeestunhumanisme,1946),originallypresentedasalecture.Hewasawardedthe1964NobelPrizeinLiteraturebutrefusedit,sayingthathealwaysdeclinedofficialhonoursandthat"awritershouldnotallowhimselftobeturnedintoaninstitution".[10]
