RogerMacDougall,ascreenwriterandplaywright,diedonThursdayatDenvilleHall,aresidenceandnursinghomeinNorthwood,England,outsideLondon.Hewas82.Mr.MacDougall,JohnDightonandAlexanderMackendrickwrotethescreenplayforthe1951comedy"TheManintheWhiteSuit,"whichstarredAlecGuinness.ReviewingthefilminTheNewYorkTimes,BosleyCrowtherwrotethatthethreewriters"concoctedamostingeniousfableofthemischiefthatscientistscandowiththeirtesttubesandcuriosityindisturbingthestatusquo."ItwasbasedonaplayscriptbyMr.MacDougall.HeandStanleyMannwrotethescreenplayforthe1959film"TheMouseThatRoared,"andMr.Crowtherwrote,alsoinTheTimes,"Theywhipupalotofcheerfulnonsensethatmakeswildfunoftheawesomeinstrumentsofmodernwar."Mr.MacDougallandMr.Mannalsowrotetheplay"HideandSeek,"aboutthemoralproblemsofanuclearscientist;itopenedattheEthelBarrymoreTheaterin1957.Mr.MacDougall'sotherplaysincludedthe1953comedy"Escapade."ReviewingitintheTimes,BrooksAtkinsonwrotethatMr.MacDougall,thescript'ssoleauthor,had"asharppen."Mr.MacDougallwasbornandgrewupinBearsden,nearGlasgow.HestudiedatGlasgowUniversityandmovedtoLondon,wherehebecameawriter.Duringmuchofthe1960'sand70's,helivedinCalifornia,wherehetaughtscreenwritingforatime.HereturnedtoEnglandpermanentlyintheearly1980's.Mr.MacDougallmarriedReneeDunlopin1935;shediedin1977.Heissurvivedbyadaughter,Elspeth,ofManhattan;ason,Lindsay,ofLondon,andtwograndchildren.Inthe1953hewasdiagnosedwithmultiplesclerosiswhicheventuallyresultedinsignificantdisability.Throughdisillusionmentwithorthodoxmedicaltreatmentsatthetime,hedevelopedadiet,looselybasedonapaleolithicdiet,thatapparentlyreturnedhimtogoodhealthandsustainedremission.
