DannyKayeleftschoolattheageof13toworkintheso-calledBorschtBeltofJewishresortsintheCatskillMountains.Itwastherehelearnedthebasicsofshowbiz.Fromtherehewentthroughaseriesofjobsinandoutofthebusiness.In1939,hemadehisBroadwaydebutin"StrawHatRevue,"butitwasthestageproductionofthemusical"LadyintheDark"in1940thatbroughthimacclaimandnoticefromagents.Alsoin1940,hemarriedSylviaFine,whowentontomanagehiscareer.Shehelpedcreatetheroutinesandgags,andwrotemostofthesongsthatheperformed.Dannycouldsinganddancelikemanyothers,buthisspecialtywasrecitingthosetongue-twistingsongsandmonologues.SamuelGoldwynhadbeentryingtosignKayetoamoviecontractfortwoyearsbeforeheeventuallyagreed.GoldwynputhiminaseriesofTechnicolormusicals,startingwithUpinArms(1944).Hisdebutwassuccessful,andhecontinuedtomakehitmoviessuchasLaviesecrètedeWalterMitty(1947)andVivemonsieurlemaire(1949).In1954,heappearedwithBingCrosbyinNoëlblanc(1954),whichwasbasedontheIrvingBerlinsongofthesamename.In1955,hemadewhatmanyconsiderhisbestcomedy,Lebouffonduroi(1955),withthebrilliantPelletwiththePoisonroutine.Likeallthings,however,thelifespanofacomedianislimitedandhismoviecareerwaned.In1960,hebegandoingspecialsontelevisionandthisledtohisownTVseries,TheDannyKayeShow(1963),whichranfrom1963to1967.Someofhislastroleswerealsohismostmemorable,suchasanintenseHolocaustsurvivorinSkokielevillagedelacolère(1981)andasakindbutgoofydentistinanepisodeofCosbyShow(1984).HealsoworkedtirelesslyforUNICEF.
